Mandarin Language

As part of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, the New Zealand (NZ) and Chinese Education Ministries agreed that Mandarin Language Assistants (MLAs) were to be placed in NZ schools for an academic year. The MLA’s role is to help promote the learning of Mandarin and to raise the quality of Mandarin language provision in NZ schools. The programme also provides MLAs with an opportunity to improve their English and to work collaboratively with experienced NZ teachers. At Robertson Road School we have been offering learning second language as part of our curriculum to our Year 7&8 children. This has been done through skpe programme with tutors directly linking from China. This year we have been fortunate to be part of the MLA programme through Confucius Institute Auckland and have a brilliant MLA working with us for 2-3 days during the year. We have been able to extend the teaching of mandarin to our year 4-6 children as well. We hope to continue with this programme in future as well.
